What does an Accounting Manager do?

An Accounting Manager handles the overall management and supervision of the accounting department. This includes overseeing the work of Accountants, reviewing financial statements, and preparing reports for the executive leadership team.

An Accounting Manager ensures that financial records are accurate and compliant with regulations, manages a team of Accountants, develops financial policies and procedures, and analyzes financial data to identify trends. Accounting Managers also collaborate with other departments to develop budgets and forecasts and maintain valuable relationships with vendors, suppliers, and customers.

 Accounting Manager Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate on budgeting and forecasting, providing insights into trends and risks.
  • Oversee the general ledger, coding, and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closings, ensuring accuracy.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls for asset safeguarding and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor the accounting team, fostering professional growth, and collaborating with other departments for financial insights.
  • Conduct financial analyses, assessing metrics including profitability and liquidity.
  • Manage cash flow for operational needs and strategies.
  • Ensure accurate tax filings and stay abreast of tax regulation changes.
  • Contribute to policy development for enhanced financial operations.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation.

Accounting Manager Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • At least five years of professional accounting experience and at least two years in a supervisory role. Public Accounting experience is a plus.
  • CPA or CPA licensure eligibility is preferred.
  • Expertise in progressive accounting, ERP implementation, and developing accounting controls and processes.
  • A strong attention to detail and accuracy.
