What does a Finance Analyst do?

A Finance Analyst performs a wide range of activities in the finance department, including financial forecasting, creating financial models, cost, and variance analyses, and generating reports. They work closely with the accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Finance Analysts also gather internal data, insights and industry research that are vital to creating informed decisions concerning the company’s overall financial status.

Finance Analyst Responsibilities

  • Analyze financial data and provide forecasting support.
  • Collaborate with sales management on building annual sales budgets.
  • Create production and overhead budgets, in conjunction with different departmental managers.
  • Build working capital and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Build the budget summary documents for management, which will serve as a reference throughout the year.
  • Establish quarterly full-year forecasts based on the latest updated budgets and current results and trends.
  • Complete monthly performance reports and communicate with management for alignment.
  • Identify key monthly variance vs budget for pricing, cost of goods sold, margins and fixed costs.
  • Develop corrective action plans with management to mitigate any financial risks.
  • Build ad hoc budget for projects, track progress against budget, and update forecast as necessary.

Finance Analyst Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience) in Finance or Accounting.
  • Previous financial analysis experience in a relevant industry is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of database and ERP system architecture.
  • Advanced Excel and Power BI Skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to manage projects, including teammate deliverables, with leadership and diplomacy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical skills, creativity, logical thinking, level-headedness and resilience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
