What does a Controls Engineer do?

Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Develop and design control systems based on project requirements, ensuring proper functionality through implementation.
  • Collaborate with project teams for seamless integration of control systems into construction projects, providing technical expertise.
  • Program and configure BAS (Building Automation Systems), PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), and other control devices, implementing HMI (Human-Machine Interface) systems for monitoring and control.
  • Specify and select instrumentation and sensors for monitoring, ensuring proper installation and calibration.
  • Conduct thorough testing, identify and resolve issues, and troubleshoot during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Generate accurate documentation for control system design and implementation, including as-built drawings.
  • Ensure control systems comply with industry standards, stay informed about advancements and recommend updates.
  • Provide training on the operation and maintenance of control systems, offering technical support during construction and post-construction phases.

Controls Engineer Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, control systems engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing control systems for construction projects.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming and HMI configuration.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and sensor technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
