What does a Chief Human Resources Officer do?

A Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) is a senior executive responsible for effectively stewarding an organization’s human resources functions. The CHRO helps to shape a company’s culture, ensure appropriate workforce alignment, and manage talent acquisition and retention.

The CHRO also develops compensation and benefits structures, designs programs for employee development and training, and oversees performance management and employee relations initiatives.

Chief Human Resources Officer Responsibilities

  • Oversee the talent acquisition process, developing effective strategies to attract and hire top talent.
  • Design and implement employee development and training programs to support employee growth and retention.
  • Implement an effective performance management process that aligns with the organization’s goals and company values.
  • Oversee employee relations initiatives, fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and transparent company culture.
  • Design and administer competitive compensation and benefits programs that attract and retain top talent, while fostering company growth.
  • Optimize and streamline HR systems and processes.
  • Establish and implement workforce planning initiatives to support the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Drive effective organizational change management initiatives, supporting employees through periods of transition.

Chief Human Resources Officer Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management
  • Master’s Degree in HR, Management and Leadership, or an MBA is preferred.
  • SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or relevant certification.
  • Ten years of progressive leadership experience successfully leading HR teams.
  • Experience leading talent acquisition, employee benefits, employee relations, workforce planning, and employee development functions of an HR department.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage with personnel at all levels of employment.
