What does a Chief Operating Officer do?

A Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a company. They work closely with the CEO and top executives to develop and implement effective business strategies.

Chief Operating Officer Responsibilities

  • Identify and implement process improvement measures to drive efficiency and profitability.
  • Allocate and deploy financial, personnel, and company resources efficiently.
  • Establish KPIs and metrics that measure performance and guide decisions toward company goals.
  • Oversee supply chain operations to ensure that customer demand is well met and business growth is supported.
  • Maintain the highest standards for quality assurance, ensuring employee safety, consistency, and compliance.
  • Evaluate operational risks and implement mitigation measures to minimize exposure.
  • Collaborate with the HR team regarding talent management and leadership development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the IT team to implement technology solutions that move the business forward.

Chief Operating Officer Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
  • MBA or industry related Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience on operations teams.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to lead individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make quick, data-driven decisions.
