What does a Benefits Manager do?
A Benefits Manager oversees employee benefits programs on behalf of an organization. They design, implement, and manage employee health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave policies.
Benefits Managers’ responsibilities revolve around coordinating with human resources to gather accurate data, improve existing benefits programs, and create new ones in adherence with company policies and regulations. They may also liaise with external agencies, develop activities for employee welfare, and resolve any issues regarding the benefits programs.
Benefits Manager Responsibilities
- Oversee benefits budget, including forecasting and invoice management.
- Improve benefits operations, systems, and processes.
- Lead annual benefits open enrollment, communication, and processing.
- Manage benefits team and vendor relationships.
- Administer group employee benefits, such as medical, dental, vision, life, and retirement plans.
- Evaluate and benchmark company benefits.
- Coordinate benefits communication strategy, including new hire materials and annual enrollment.
- Assist with annual benefits renewal and vendor negotiations.
Benefits Manager Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field.
- Previous benefits program and team management experience.
- Deep understanding of employee benefits, including health, retirement, and insurance.
- Familiarity with relevant laws, e.g., ACA.
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office.
- Negotiation skills for vendor management and contracts.
- Relevant professional certifications like CEBS or CBP are advantageous.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Displays leadership and adapts in a changing benefits landscape.
