What does a Human Resources Generalist do?

A Human Resources Generalist is one of the most versatile and vital members of an HR team. They wear many hats, including focusing on recruiting, employee relations, benefits administration, training, compliance and reporting.

An HR Generalist adapts to an organization’s needs and plays a critical role in supporting the success of the company, while also meeting the needs of employees.

Human Resources Generalist Responsibilities

  • Manage the full cycle of the recruiting process, including job postings, screening candidates, conducting interviews, and extending job offers.
  • Facilitate the onboarding process for new hires and oversee the offboarding process for departing employees.
  • Assist with employee relations through conducting investigations and participating in mediation as needed.
  • Assist employees throughout the open enrollment process and participate in administering benefits programs as needed.
  • Organize training sessions or workshops to enhance the Learning & Development program.
  • Stay abreast of labor law and regulation changes that impact the organization and provide guidance regarding strategies to maintain compliance.
  • Track metrics and trends to inform the leadership team on data driven insights.
  • Promote a positive work culture through creating employee recognition programs, surveys, or activities that drive engagement and retention.

Human Resources Generalist Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Communications, Organizational Development, Business, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience in an HR Generalist role.
  • Relevant HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP).
  • Demonstrated experience with employee relations, talent acquisition, and benefits administration.
  • Advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with Microsoft Office, HRIS, and payroll systems.
