What does a Vice President of Human Resources do?

A Vice President of Human Resources  is a senior-level executive who oversees the HR department and all of its functions. They are responsible for developing strategies to attract, retain, and manage employees, and have a direct impact on company culture and change management.

A VP of HR also leads the recruitment process, manages employee relations, and handles employee compensation and benefits programs.

Vice President of Human Resources Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the executive leadership team to craft the company’s vision and mission in relation to HR objectives.
  • Develop strategic HR plans and policies in alignment with company goals.
  • Build and lead a high performing HR team with an emphasis on open communication, transparency, accountability, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Oversee labor and employee relations initiatives.
  • Develop attractive employee benefits and compensation programs that encourage employee growth and retention.
  • Ensure all HR initiatives comply with legal and ethical relations and best practices.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of HR operations and policies through metrics and KPIs.
  • Streamline and improve HR processes, optimizing for efficiency and effectiveness.

Vice President of Human Resources Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Human Resources or equivalent.
  • At least 12 years of progressive leadership experience on an HR team.
  • At least three years of experience as a VP of HR.
  • SHRM-SCP or SPHR Certification (or equivalent) required.
  • Experience in strategic HR planning and implementation.
  • Deep knowledge of all HR functions.
  • Understanding of labor laws and HR regulations.
  • Well-organized with excellent leadership qualities.
