What does a Law Firm Administrator do?

A Law Firm Administrator plays a vital role in managing the business operations of a law firm. In this role, Law Firm Administrators handle critical responsibilities such as streamlining administrative processes, coordinating insurance renewals, company risk mitigation, and managing client relationships.

Law Firm Administrators also oversee financial, human resources, and operations functions, including budgeting, billing, hiring, training, and office management. In most cases, they are also involved in implementing new technology or software to improve office efficiency.

Law Firm Administrator Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Executive team regarding firm business and marketing strategies, budgeting, hiring, and risk mitigation.
  • Recruits, onboards, supervises, and manages the performance of support staff.
  • Oversees Human Resource functions including personnel file maintenance, benefits administration, payroll management, PTO tracking, and personnel policy implementation.
  • Coordinates training for support staff and Attorneys regarding policies, procedures, and systems use.
  • Monitors, maintains, and optimizes internal policies, processes, procedures, and key operating systems.
  • Oversees Financial Support team to monitor time-tracking, billing, trust account management, budget management, collections, and bookkeeping.
  • Monitors budget variance and cashflow for the firm.
  • Implements company marketing strategies with appropriate support team.
  • Manages the firm’s physical space, including office organization and cleanliness, emergency preparedness, furniture and equipment functionality, computer systems, and phone systems.

Law Firm Administrator Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
  • Self-starter with at least five years of operations, administration, and progressive leadership experience in a legal setting.
  • Confident working with new software and technology.
  • Exceptional communication skills and experience with developing company policies and procedures.
