What does a Legal Assistant do?

A Legal Assistant is responsible for proactively managing the administrative needs of one or more Attorneys. Legal Assistants often provide support by preparing documents, maintaining files, records, and tracking systems, managing schedules, communicating with clients and other external parties, and planning meetings and events.

Legal Assistant Responsibilities

  • Compile, proofread, and edit drafts of contracts and other legal documents.
  • Assist with correspondence, communicating effectively with clients, other law firms, and any other internal or external stakeholders.
  • Manage client files, draft engagement letters and track case documentation flow.
  • Attend meetings with Attorneys as needed, record meeting minutes, and assist with presentation preparation.
  • Track project and filing deadlines, ensuring the team stays on target.
  • Conduct legal research and assist with due diligence as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal compliance matters, ensuring the team is adhering to regulations.
  • Track billable hours and ensure accurate and timely billing in accordance with client and firm agreements.

Legal Assistant Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Legal Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • At least two years of Legal Assistant experience in a related sector.
  • Ability to understand and interpret legal documents.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Tech savvy with a willingness to learn new programs.
