What does a Legal Coordinator do?

A Legal Coordinator is an essential supporting member of a corporate legal department. Legal Coordinators often maintain corporate legal documents and compliance filings, draft contracts, track deadlines, organize board meetings, and assist with company risk mitigation efforts. They are responsible for helping the legal department run smoothly and aid in keeping a corporation in compliance with local and federal regulations.

Legal Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Manage and organize corporate legal documents, including filing, indexing, and archiving, ensuring easy access and retrieval.
  • Coordinate schedules, appointments, and meetings for legal staff, including booking rooms, sending reminders, and arranging necessary equipment or materials.
  • Liaise between the legal department and other departments or external entities to facilitate communication and document exchange.
  • Prepare and draft basic legal documents and correspondence under the supervision of Attorneys.
  • Assist with corporate governance matters, including organizing board meetings and maintaining corporate governance documentation.
  • Assist with compliance and risk mitigation efforts, through tracking deadlines, coordinating audits and filings, and drafting company policies or procedures.
  • Monitor legal department expenses, process invoices, and assist with budget preparation and tracking.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all legal documents and communications as per the legal department’s guidelines and policies.

Legal Coordinator Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies, Business Administration, or a related certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a Legal Coordinator or Legal Assistant role.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to analyze and synthesize complex legal information.
  • Strong understanding of legal accounting and financial terminology.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
