What does a Plant Controller do?

The Plant Controller manages the overall financial control and accounting operations of a plant including general and cost accounting, payables & receivables, and payroll. They provide support in administrative duties and ensuring that operations adhere to budgets, schedules, and standards.

A Plant Controller is also responsible for collecting and analyzing financial data and cost reports, preparing financial statements, maintaining databases, performing audits and risk assessments, and overseeing the accounting team goals and procedures.

Plant Controller Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing financial goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage Accounting Department functions: receivables, payables, payroll, general ledger, fixed assets, bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and profitability analysis.
  • Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) and revenue recognition per GAAP.
  • Direct Accounting & Finance team, coordinate audits, and review external accountant work.
  • Supervise financial statement preparation, including senior management reports and forecasts.
  • Ensure accurate monthly close, analyze budget variances, and assess cost-cutting opportunities.
  • Review cash balances and enhance cash management.
  • Bridge finance and operations, conduct internal assessments, and establish controls.
  • Maintain robust internal controls, ensuring SOX compliance and asset safeguarding.
  • Oversee equipment accounting, reporting, capex, and manage accounting staff.
  • Lead local/regional budgeting, mentor accounting team, and foster development.

Business Development Manager Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting or Finance or work experience equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience and demonstrated growth/advancement in dynamic business environments.
  • Experience in manufacturing is highly preferred.
  • Experience with percentage of completion (POC) accounting for projects a plus
  • 3-5 years’ experience in private industry, preferably in construction or service industry
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
