What does a Director of Investments do?
The Director of Investments oversees acquisitions and investments for the firm, focusing on those that bring in the highest possible return for their money. They have a variety of responsibilities that often include handling all activities associated with managing a portfolio of assets, loans, operating businesses, and/or land, monitoring performance measurement and transaction settlement, and determining the best strategy for managing or disposing of the investments. Also, they are responsible for building complex financial modeling to forecast the future financial performance of the acquisition, as well as prepare and present investment memorandums to the leadership team and/or investment committee.
Director of Investments Responsibilities
- Create and develop a diversified portfolio to enable increased returns and lower volatility consistent with time horizon, risk tolerance, and income needs of the firm.
- Conduct analyses, prepare materials and direct the organization on investment and financial issues.
- Work with and present to investment committees of endowment, foundation, pension, private equity, institutional, or private wealth clients.
- Select and evaluate investment managers for virtually all asset classes.
- Represent the company externally through marketing presentations, conferences, and other business development opportunities.
- Develop a highly skill treasury and financial management team to achieve established objectives.
- Provide support for investor relations activities, maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners.
- Improve derivative valuation tools by incorporating public market data.
- Enhance controls and processing environment for bank loan securities resulting in a sustainable daily operating model.
Director of Investments Qualifications
- A degree in finance or a relevant field from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 5 years related experience.
- Strong experience leading, supervising, and motivating a team of investment professionals.
- Strategic thinker and proficient in decision-making.
- Appropriate investment knowledge and experience, gained from work at an investment firm or a large institutional investor or family office.
- Demonstrated analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- An ability to work independently and in teams.
