What does a Data Analyst do?

A Data Analyst is responsible for safeguarding and interpreting a company’s data to provide insights and recommendations based on the organization’s goals and objectives. They manage an organization’s data sets, usually related to market performance, sales, and finance.  Some large sales and marketing teams have an in-house Data Analyst that specifically focuses on their metrics to help drive new business growth.

Data Analyst Responsibilities

  • Assess and optimize the process for proper data integration from all applicable sources.
  • Clean and prepare data into a usable format.
  • Analyze sales and marketing data to identify trends, patterns, and provide data-driven insights that can inform the team’s decision making.
  • Develop sales forecasts and demand plans through the analysis of historical data, assessment of market trends, and integration of business goals and objectives.
  • Assist marketing team with customer segmentation to identify target markets.
  • Analyze the performance metrics of marketing campaigns to aid in decision making around future messaging and marketing efforts.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to provide actionable insights for the sales and marketing teams.

Data Analyst Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data analytics, statistics or a related field.
  • At least two years of professional experience as a Data Analyst working with sales and marketing teams.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools and programming languages, such as SQL, Python, R, Excel, and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Experience with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce), marketing automation platforms (e.g., HubSpot), and web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Demonstrated experience in handling large data sets and relational databases.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on data accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in an easy-to-understand format.
